‘If I don’t return it…’

She’d have to think this through for a while.

“We’ve arrived, ma’am!”

The taxi stopped at the entrance of an old apartment complex.

Jinho pulled out a couple of ten-thousand-won bills from his wallet and handed them to the driver, then got out.

“I’m off first. I’ve got cram school. You go straight home, no detours.”

“Okay. Thanks.”

“Later.”

Jinho walked off toward the opposite side of the apartment complex.

“Thank you for the ride.”

“You’re a polite young lady.”

She bowed respectfully to the driver, then stepped out of the taxi.

Her apartment building was right in front of the complex.

She rode the elevator up to the 7th floor.

It was an old and small apartment.

Unlike Jinho’s wealthy family, her home was shabby and rented, but she had always dreamed of buying a place for herself and her mother someday.

Beep. Beep beep.

The door opened when she entered the passcode.

Waiting inside was a family portrait hanging on the wall opposite the entrance.

“I’m home, Dad.”

In it was a man on horseback, lifting a trophy with a big smile.

Her father, once a promising equestrian athlete—but no longer in this world.

“You’re home, Suyeon?”

“Ah, I’m home!”

“Sorry I couldn’t pick you up. I wanted to make a warm meal for my daughter.”

“You didn’t have to go that far.”

A spicy smell wafted from the kitchen.

Most likely, it was her favorite dish—kimchi stew.

It would be packed with tofu and pork.

“You’re really okay, right? You don’t need to rest more?”

“If I rest more, my boss will scold me. I’ll go to work starting tomorrow.”

“Alright. I’m almost done. Go wash up and relax in the living room.”

“I’ll just organize my stuff and help out, too.”

“No, it’s fine. Absolutely fine. Mom will handle it.”

When she was like this, her mother couldn’t be stopped.

After unpacking, she sat down on the living room sofa.

A commercial was playing on the TV.

“Unicorns… are alive!”

“Onii-chan!”

“I’ll feed you, and pat your head too…!”

A mobile game advertisement.

It emphasized the bond between user and game character.

‘…Han.’

She caressed her smartphone.

Once, the game she had poured her passion into was inside it.

‘I worked harder than that guy.’

She wasn’t acting like that commercial actor.

She had been sincere, even now.

‘They’re… alive.’

Three days ago felt like a dream.

If someone else heard what was in her heart, they’d probably laugh at her.

Call her a delusional addict and click their tongue.

‘Why did it have to end there?’

Her sub-master, Han Israth—what was he fighting for?

She didn’t know exactly.

But somehow, she felt she had understood his heart.

‘There’s something I don’t know.’

Something she could never understand from the outside world.

And yet…

‘They’re alive.’

Call it delusion if you will.

She couldn’t confess this to anyone.

But she was sure.

‘Those heroes were alive.’

Even if they were just part of a mobile game, they had fought with everything they had.

That’s why she gave part of her life to them, too.

Because she wanted to see them succeed.

“Who… are you?”

She whispered toward the smartphone.

There was no way an answer would come.

But she couldn’t hold back otherwise.

“Han.”

Her face twisted.

So pathetic, it felt like she was about to cry.

‘I want to play the game one more time.’

She wanted to know what happened to him.

If possible, she wanted to help him.

“You really are…”

“Suyeon!”

She snapped out of her thoughts.

“It’s done. Come eat, sweetheart.”

“Ah, yes! Coming!”

Her mother was waiting.

She couldn’t show her a sad face.

She left the smartphone on the sofa and headed to the kitchen.

The voices of the mother and daughter echoed through the home.

A few minutes later—

Vrrr!

The smartphone on the sofa vibrated and its screen lit up.
